An amazing discovery

Buried ‘neath the years

of accumulated disappointment

I found a tender heart,

smothered with layers of deep distress.

I stooped & gently traced

its outline in the dust,

though hardly seen, it kept

its shape, nonetheless

Barely beating, still

suffering – and suffocating

Yet warmly responding

to my silky exploration

I sensed its weakened pulse

begin to quicken

as it emerged into

the daylight – excavation

Its beauty lay before me

And could not be denied

A discovery of such

matchless worth, I’ll prize

Reborn to live and

its potential fulfil

From the ashes of its death

Phoenix did arise
